5 tips for wearing statement jewellery

Jewelry is one of the best ways to breathe some new life into your outfit and enhance your best features at the same time. While statement jewelry is designed for you to have some fun with and pair with your best outfits to really set them off, it’s important to make sure that you wear them right in order to get the most out them. Wearing statement pieces can be tricky, as it’s all about getting the balance right between making a statement or going over the top. To make sure that you always look your best in your favourite statement pieces, we’ve put together the top rules for wearing them.

Don’t Overdo It

The beauty of statement jewelry is that you only have to wear one piece to really bring an outfit to life and add just the right amount of sparkle and glamour. One of the biggest mistakes that ladies make when wearing statement jewelry is to wear too many pieces all at once. When wearing a gorgeous statement piece such as these from Ascot Diamonds, you should make sure that it stands out by wearing it on its own or making sure that any other jewelry pieces that you choose are simple and basic. Statement jewelry with something like a floral maxi dress? My eye would have no idea what to focus on.

Check Your Outfit

If you’re wearing a statement piece of clothing, you should leave the statement jewelry for another day. For example, if you’re wearing a top or blouse from StyleWe with a lot of embellishments or a standout pattern, wearing statement jewelry is simply going to overdo it and make the whole outfit look too much. Statement jewelry is best paired with simple outfits, such as a little black dress or a plain top/blouse and trousers, as it brings a plainer outfit to life and adds the extra glamour and sparkle that you want. If your outfit is making enough of a statement on its own, there’s no need to add the jewelry to it!

Don’t Just Wear Necklaces

Many people think of necklaces as being the only type of statement jewelry out there. And whilst statement necklaces can certainly make a popular choice and definitely look great, don’t limit your statement collection by simply choosing necklaces alone. Instead, make sure that you vary your statement pieces by going for cuff bracelets, statement rings, and even statement headpieces which can be a very interesting addition to any outfit.

Consider Neckline and Hairstyles

If you are planning to pair a statement necklace with your outfit, it’s important to not only consider the other accessories that you will be wearing, but the type of neckline that your outfit has and the style of your hair. If you are wearing your hair down, for example, it may be better to wear a statement ring or bracelet instead so as not to draw attention from it. If your neckline is lacy or has embellishments, make sure that you do not choose a necklace which clashes with it.

Little annoyances

I've discovered some items in my closet that are impossible to wear if you live alone.  Exhibit A: Bracelets with clasps.  If I'm trying to wear the bracelet on one arm, that only leaves one hand to try to manoeuvre a clasp and put it on the right link on the chain.  Not to mention that the links are super tiny, which makes it even more of a challenge.

Then there are some items that are just plain impossible.  Let's turn our attention now to Exhibit B: The faux collar.  Suddenly, it has given me something new to be (self-) conscious about- my fat neck.  Yeah, my faux collar is too small for my neck, so it rises up and won't stay put near any shirt's neckline.  So if faux collars are gonna stay a thing, could we please adopt the system of neck sizing?

Wedding sage

Tis the season of spring engagements, summer weddings, and all that romantic crap.  If I was to have a wedding tomorrow (or sometime this month- tomorrow is a bit unrealistic), I'd want my colour scheme to be sage green, grey, and champagne.  Right now, I'm more interested in wedding details than anything else.  Floral arrangements, dresses, cakes, and such.  Creating a whimsical party where everything gets to look like green tea and vanilla frosting?  That's definitely what I'm looking forward to.  Well, aside from getting some permanent diamond finger bling.  I guess that's kinda cool too.

Spring cravings

During my point of insanity from writing way too many cover letters and sulking about how I'm potentially going to be unemployed and poor this summer, it seems that the most logical thing to do is browse for a new wardrobe online with the money that I don't have.

If I do crack, it's a good thing that eFoxcity is reasonably priced enough to keep my wallet content.  The site is filled with really cute items that are perfect for spring. They have a great selection of styles and colours, especially if classy and feminine pieces is your thing.  I'm currently lusting over these bright bottoms, a neutral blazer, bold jewellery, and chiffon.  Seriously, chiffon needs to stay in.  None of this "tight fit" stuff. Why didn't we think that material that flows away from your body was a good idea sooner?  And it's pretty.  Now who can argue with that logic.

Sweets

I'm getting ready for tomorrow's festivities! Aka. I don't know why I bother picking out pops of pink and shimmer when guys don't notice details anyway.

Personally, I'm looking forward to February 15 instead.  Or as I like to call it, "Cheap Leftover Valentine's Day Candy Day".  Then, I can buy more candy blocks and gummy bears to build a gummy bear city being attacked by a Gummybearzilla. No, I don't have too much time on my hands...just a really awesome imagination.

Weapons

Fashion is getting dangerous.  The whole trend of spikes is dangerous.  Sure, nothing is actually pointy enough to harm someone, but in my mind, I imagine some kind of fashion ninja whipping off a shoe or earring to be used as a weapon should a threat arise. To my knowledge, you're still allowed to go through the airport with spiky jewellery.  Isn't it kind of funny how you can walk through an airport armed with spikes, but you'll get searched and barraged for trying to smuggle in toothpaste?

-Black chiffon blouse (collar)
-Spiked drop earrings from H&M
-Frontal faux leather pants

Jewellery storage

It's absolutely freezing outside, so I decided to stay in for the whole weekend.  So my exciting indoor task?  Untangling necklaces.  So here's a few photos of my jewellery organization systems that are supposed to prevent tangling from happening.  Behold: my budding jewellery tree where I use rings as its soil and decorate it with layered and chunky necklaces!  And also, the best staple little black dress that anyone could ever have: the jewellery LBD.  I always complain about dresses that have no pockets, which is why this "dress" is all the more awesome- so many pockets, I haven't even filled all of them yet!

Gaming fashion

Geek: A common term used to describe the socially inept or awkward, typically to do with people who are odd or go against the mainstream.

Today, "geek" (or nerd, dork, and whatever else them hip kids are saying these days) can describe people with large glasses, knee-high socks, perfectly messy hair, and a pair of oxfords.

While I admit to giving in to the whole "geek chic" fad here and there, I still appreciate the irony that has people striving to gain the image of this label that was once an insult.  Regardless, my nerdy heart couldn't help but to skip a beat at the sight of these wonderfully nerdy fashions.  Classic games as clothing and accessories?  Now this is some geek gear that I could get used to.

Ultimately, I prefer Urban Dictionary's definition though:
"The people you pick on in high school and end up working for as an adult".

It's personal

There's something about personalized pieces that can give off a little extra special sentiment.  Perhaps it's that  knowledge that it's something custom that was made for you, and belongs only to you.  Or maybe even a little snobbery that you own an item that wasn't mass produced, thus making you unique.  Whatever it is, I have a thing for personalized pieces.  Okay, well I have two pieces of personalized jewellery.  I consider that more than the average person though.  And it's great because if I ever have a sudden spout of amnesia and lose all other forms of ID, I'll still have a necklace and ring to tell me (and others) who I am.  Come to think of it, it's pretty and everything, but personalized pieces should be used strictly for safety measures in case of events such as this.

Put a [customized] ring on it

I know what you're thinking. You're pondering your worst fear.
(Aside from death, snakes, spiders, heights, and dirty restaurants...)
Your worst fear is getting an engagement ring or wedding band that you hate. That you will be stuck with for the rest of your life.
Or on the flip side, giving her an engagement ring or wedding band that she hates. That she will hold against you for the rest of your life.

Luckily for you, Anjolee has the solution.

Anjolee offers a wide selection of high quality jewellery, with the best feature being that their pieces are customizable to fit your tastes.  Upon choosing a design, you can then choose the details of your jewellery with different metal types, carat weight, diamond quality, and more.  This way, you can specify the pieces to fit your (or her) tastes, and your budget. Seriously, nothing says "I love you and I'm a sweet romantic" like a ring designed specially for the love of your life.

In addition to diamond wedding bands and engagement rings, Anjolee offers customizable bangle bracelets, earrings, and necklaces too.

Even if you're not thinkin' wedding bells in the near future, take a browse around the site- their selection might give you some ideas that you can add to your 'perfect wedding must-haves' list.

P.S. Silver/white gold band + round diamond shape.  Kinda like in the first picture.

How to: Dress for your New Year's Eve bash

If you're one to be out with the crowds popping some bubbly once midnight hits, you're going to want to ring in the new year in style- literally.  New Year's Eve calls for some extravagance, glitz, sparkle, and shine.  Sure, a typical holiday dress would do the trick, but there's just something special about some sequins, no?  Sequins and sparkles can be a bit tricky to pull off and aren't always for everyone.  But there are a few tricks you can use to glam up your outfit without looking like an overdone Christmas tree (that's so last week!).

1.  Sequin pieces: If full sequin dresses are a little over-the-top for you, try a sequin skirt. Or a sequin top.  Or sequin shorts.  Okay basically, just don't do a full-body sequin outfit then and aim for one sequin piece in your ensemble.  A nice additive to any outfit is a blazer.  It covers up a bit of the sequin for a bit of a more tamed look without taking out too much glitz.  Yup, that's classy.

2.  Adding sparkle to your step:  Oh, you're not a sequin dress/top/skirt/shorts kinda person?  Then the accessories is where you should be aiming.  Sparkly golden heels and silver platforms are definitely the statement shoe to have for NYE to glam up any outfit.  But please, if you're gonna wear a sequin dress, go for a simple black shoe instead- too much sparkle not only boards on tacky, but tends to blind people from across the room too.

3.  Accessorize and shine:  If you're in a last minute rush and don't feel like buying new shoes or a new dress, just a few simple accessories can make that old LBD in your closet shine.  In addition to looking great, accessories also tend to be the more affordable option.  Layer up your necklaces and bracelets and stock up on that silver and gold for a more festive look.  The beauty with chunky layered looks is that it's easy to throw on jewellery that you already own to create this look, even if a bit mismashed.  A statement clutch will also do the trick in adding a small specialty to your outfit.

Happy New Year, all- catch ya in 2012!
