How to fix "I have nothing to wear" syndrome

I know what it’s like to get frustrated and decide I’m no longer leaving the house because I have nothing to wear. But somehow, it's also equally frustrating going shopping with that annoying "do I really need this" voice going through my head. So I've found that the best solution to both spectrums of problems is to really be in touch with your style and what's hanging in your closet.

Go Through Your Wardrobe

Start going through your wardrobe, and make piles. If you haven’t worn something in months, put that in one pile. If you wear something quite a lot, put that in another pile. If you wear something occasionally, put this in another pile. These piles will help you to work out what it is you need to do to your wardrobe. In the pile of clothes you don’t wear, take a look at what there is and figure out why you don’t wear these things. Do they not match other things in your wardrobe? Are they uncomfortable to wear? Write a list. These are things you should avoid when you go shopping in future. When looking at the pile of clothes you do wear, write out why you wear them the most, and then take this list with you when you go shopping. This is what you’re looking for. In the pile of clothes you sometimes wear, work out what you could do to wear them more. Maybe you could purchase an item that would bring everything together. Learn as much as you can about your habits and you’ll be better prepared in future.

Define Your Style

Use some words to define your style. You can use anything you like, from luxe, to sporty, to sports luxe. What defines you the most? Include words that describe your personality too. When shopping, ask yourself if the clothes you are looking at fit the bill. If so, you’re onto a winner.

Note Down Which Outfits Did/Didn’t Work And Why

Do you have any outfits in your head that you absolutely loved? Figure out why they worked so well for you. Any you decided you didn’t like afterwards? Work this out too. You’ll be able to put better outfits together in future, but don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone is the way to go.

Consider Putting Together A Capsule Wardrobe

Putting together a capsule wardrobe can save you time and money. It can mean you always have something to wear. You won’t waste money on clothing, and you’ll never say ‘I have nothing to wear!’, as you have an endless amount of outfits to choose from. You can find lists online of what you need and what you should do to get started. Starting again can be scary, but when you look for Asos discount codes and other codes to save money, it can be made easier.

Have Rules For Buying

Have rules for buying clothes. For instance, anything you buy needs to match your personal style definitions. Anything you buy must match at least 3 items in your wardrobe, and be worn multiple ways. Everyone will have their own rules, but you’ll be a smarter buyer once you define them.

Never Buy On Impulse

Buying on impulse can give us a rush, but this is one reason why so many of us have clothes we don’t wear, or only wear once. Rather than buying on impulse, ask yourself if you’ll really get your wear out of this. Will the novelty wear off? Maybe wait a few weeks, and if you’re still thinking about it, buy it.

6 Ways to stay dressy in cooler weather

I know what you're thinking: "But it's still August! Why are we even talking about the cooler weather?!" Because here, we just had a massive heatwave for a few weeks that had me dreaming of being cozy without being sweaty. And as per the usual Canada trend, fall temperatures sneak up on us pretty quickly!

One major issue is that dressing for cooler weather can quickly become frumpy. Big coats, oversized scarves, and other chunky pieces can turn an outfit from haute to hobo in an instant. But with the right clothes and proper accessorising, staying dressy even when the temps turn down will be a cinch. Check out a few of my favorite tips below.

1. Don't Skip the Jewelry

Jewelry is a key component to keeping your outfits dressy during cool weather. Make your outfit pop with the right pieces, like statement earrings, a bib necklace, or a stack of bangles. Have fun with colour, too. Cold weather doesn't mean drab hues.

2. Heels Add Instant Oomph

Rather than wear flats all the time, throw on a pair of closed-toe pumps or heeled booties for a leg-elongating ensemble that will also add instant oomph to even your oversized coats. And even if you dislike stilettos, wedges and thick-stacked heels are totally on trend this season. For the unexpected, choose a coloured pair to dress up a plain black dress, trousers, pencil skirt, or jeans.

3. Let Your Accessories Shine

Aside from jewelry, there are many different ways to amp up the dressy factor of a cool weather outfit. Other accessories like handbags, hats, belts, and scarves can all make a difference. A belted waist over a large coat adds an instant hourglass, while a sparkly or sequined scarf will add a touch of glamour. And don't forget the dramatic impact a wide-brim felted hat can have on an ensemble.

4. Tackle the Tailored Coat

A beautifully tailored coat can instantly elevate any outfit, making it appear much dressier than it really is. Whether you pair it with jeans, trousers, or a cocktail dress, you simply can't go wrong. Choose camel, black, or cream for a piece that will go with nearly everything.

5. Blouses and Camis Abound

A surefire way to look dressy even when the weather turns cold is by choosing the right kind of top. Opt for something ruffled, feminine, and billowy and even a pair of skinny jeans and heels will look phenomenal. The great part is that beautiful blouses and camis are also excellent for work.

6. Get a Leg Up on Style

Whether you bare your legs (with tights on, of course) or prefer to cover them in pants, the right bottoms are key to keeping it dressy. Patterned tights add a fun touch to skirts and dresses and can be quite beautiful. Black lace and geo patterns are both great choices. And don't forget the impact a great-fitting pair of trousers can have on even a plain white fitted long sleeve tee.

I hope you've enjoyed this little rundown of tips on how to appear dressy even when the temps turns cool. All it takes are a few strategic items and edits of pieces you probably already have. Remember the importance of layers, accessories, and proper fit for boundless outfits that are both stylish and warm.

How to: Get easy effortless waves with a hair straightener

Having super thin hair, I like having a bit of volume to my hair without a lot of effort. Reading other tutorials, I don't know what their normal routine encompasses, but I don't consider mousse, hairspray, hair pins, and 10+ minutes to be "effortless". So, I came up with my own trick that only takes 2-5 minutes and no extra fuss.

My Irresistable Me professional flat iron instantly heats up, which really helps when I press snooze too many times. With diamond and tourmaline technology, I actually don't need to spray my hair before use because my hair is truly still smooth and not fried afterwards.

How to get the look: Instead of wasting time sectioning off my hair, I just grab strands and start curling. To do this, clamp the strand of hair between the straightener and pull the hair while curling inwards, holding the straightening iron vertically. I like really loose waves, so curling from the mid-section of my hair to the end of each strand typically takes about 3 seconds at 370 degrees heat.

The beauty about these messy waves is that it really doesn't matter if you're a little sloppy with the technique. Some waves bigger than others? Miss a few strands? No problem! Remember, effortless waves should actually be effortless. Just run your fingers through your hair a bit and you're good to go. I still have a few fly-aways in my finished photo below, but I kind of like it like that - it really adds to the "I woke up like this" polished messy look.

How to: Wear a maxi dress

Maxi dresses are dresses that typically reach all the way to the floor. They can come in different shapes, patterns, and colours, but they can be notoriously hard to style for some people. Some people naturally throw on any maxi dress and incredible, while others need to put a little more thought into things. Here’s what you should know to pull off a maxi dress:

Keep Things versatile With Layering

You don’t have to wear a maxi dress by itself every time. You can keep things nice and versatile by layering your dress up in different ways. You can wear a turtleneck underneath a v neck dress for warmth and interest. Adding jackets and different things will always make your outfits look more interesting.

Add Edgy Accessories

Edgy accessories will give your dress more personality and character. Why not wear your dress with a cool hat, or some statement bangles? You can play around with different accessories you like to see what works best for you. Adding accessories like this will give your dress the wow factor! You can’t go wrong with a black maxi dress. You can pair anything with it and it’ll still look great.

Structured Pieces Make Them Great For Work

Think you can’t wear a maxi dress for work? Think again! Structured pieces make them great for work, so add a nice blazer or jacket to smarten up your look. Although maxi dresses are a good casual piece, this doesn’t mean you can’t find ways of dressing them up. You can wear them any time!

White Sneakers Make The Perfect Casual Shoe

So many people would have you believe that there are only certain types of shoe you should wear with your maxi dress. Sandals and wedges do look great with maxi dresses. Platforms can look great too. However, white sneakers make the perfect casual shoe. Converse or vans will add a casual element and make your dress more wearable for day to day. Many people wear flip flops with these dresses as a way of keeping things casual, but adding a white sneaker could be a cool way to change it up.

Wear The Right One For Your Shape

Knowing your body shape and what suits it is important when you want to wear something like the maxi dress. They aren’t all created equal. Some are great for straight up and down girls who want to create curves, while others will make pear shaped girls more proportionate. Know what kind you need to look for to enhance your shape and you’ll look a million dollars. You don’t always need to stick to these ‘rules’, but they can flatter you if that’s what you want!

I hope these tips have helped give you an idea of how you can pull off that maxi dress you’ve been eyeing. Remember, wearing anything and pulling it off is about having the confidence to do so. These tips will help, but you need to channel the confidence too. Have fun!

How to: Get that 70s look

The '70s were an iconic time for a lot of reasons—Watergate, Pink Floyd, M*A*S*H*, disco, Star Wars—the decade was filled with memorable moments in history that are still revisited today.

But there's arguably no '70s-inspired aspect that's more prominently represented in modern, day-to-day life than the fashion.

Now, we're not talking about leaving the house without a bra on. Sure, going braless is a pretty accurate way of representing the free spirit and themes of women's empowerment that were popular at the time, but there are much more practical, and less obscure ways to represent your love of the decade.

For starters, forget skin-tight, fitted tops, and try to embrace tunics with a loose, flowing silhouette. The tops are ideal if you want to recreate the free and open-minded mentality of the 1970s (with a bra of course).

If you're willing to look outside of the box a bit, plus-sized designs, and even some maternity clothes can be a great way to achieve the look. Their empire styles or designs without cinched waists are a great solution for creating a look that ebbs and flows with your moves instead of clinging to every curve of your body. If you take a look at some of the most popular styles from Woman Within, you can see that bright, busy patterns aren't hard to come by in plus-sized clothing. Try a boho top that incorporates lace or knitted floral embroidery for added '70s flare.

In addition to that flowing top, you can't recreate your '70s style without the right accessories. According to Lisa Armstrong from The Telegraph, several choice accessories can easily make an outfit era appropriate. For example, you can try a floppy, wide brim hat, platform sandals, or a purse adorned with suede fringe. And let's not forget the crucial jewelry.

Armstrong recommends that you try to incorporate "teeny-tiny florals or vertical and chevron stripes. Mix and clash them, or amp up the drama of plains with big, sculptural jewellery."

And finally, rediscover your flair for flares. If you're like many of us who buy pieces that will last, your quality flares are probably held up in the back of your closet somewhere, waiting for their day to be back in the spotlight.

Well, today is the day. Bustle reporter Stephanie Chon officially declared the flare jeans, and their '70s-inspired style, "timeless" as well as an easy way to represent your favorite denim in a fun and flattering way.

When discussing flares, Chon says that "they're going to become a closet essential for the upcoming colder seasons, it's time to start looking for the best flare jeans for fall now." But flares can vary from boyfriend cuts to skinnies and flares so big at the bottom that you trip over them. Follow her guide to find the pair that's best for your '70s style.

You might not have lived through the 1970s, but that doesn't mean you can't embrace the style that defined the decade. Grab a few loose fitting tops, some bold colors, and pair of flares, and you're well on your way to challenging the style of any hippy that dares to cross your path!

Simple makeup tips for the lazy and inept

If you’re completely new to makeup, or just lazy, using it can be a little daunting. I'm one of those super impatient people who can't be bothered watching a 10 minute video telling me how to achieve the perfect winged eyeliner. Look, I'm tired in the morning, I'm rushed, so all I want are the basics.

Always Do Your Makeup in Natural Light

This is one of the most important things you’ll ever learn about makeup. It should always be done in natural light. I tend to fall into the same trap a lot: I think I'm having a fantastic makeup day at home, then I go to work, look into a mirror in the natural light there, and discover that my foundation is smudgy and barely blended.

If you have no choice but to do it in artificial light, you should invest in a mirror that mimics natural light. This is when the most flaws will show on your face, so you can properly see what you’re doing. If you do your makeup in artificial light it might look good, but the second you step outside, it could look completely different. If you do it in natural light to begin with, it’ll look good whatever light you’re in.

Find Out What Suits Your Skin Type

There are hundreds of different types of cosmetics out there, so it can be difficult picking things if you’re a newbie. The best way to go about it is to find out what your skin type is. When you know what suits your skin type, you can go about choosing products accordingly. If you choose products at random without considering whether they suit your skin, it’ll suffer. Not only that, your makeup won’t look the best that it can!

Get Used to Using Brushes and Sponges

Lots of people start off using their fingers when they begin using makeup, but brushes and sponges offer the best finish. If you can invest in a good set of brushes and a beauty blender, most of the hard work will be taken out of it for you. You can find lots of tutorials on using them on YouTube, so all you’ll need to do is practice.

Less is More

Less is more when it comes to makeup, especially if you’re just starting out. Don’t try to do anything too complicated right off the bat. Master the basic looks to start with. All you need for a simple makeup look is a little foundation, concealer, eyebrow pencil/powder, and mascara. Even if you’re wearing a lot of products, it doesn’t need to look like you’re wearing a lot of products. When you feel more confident, you can start to make a bit of a statement!

How to: Make a style statement

Everyone has that moment where they look back on what they used to wear and think about a trend gone wrong. Making a statement is one thing, but there's a fine line between unique and tacky. Here's what you can do to avoid those cringe-worthy memories:

Preempt Any Wardrobe Malfunctions

Making a style statement can be a risky business, especially if you plan on wearing anything revealing. Try to preempt any wardrobe malfunctions. Maybe practice wearing the outfit for a little while beforehand just to be sure. You can’t be too careful - you don’t want a wardrobe malfunction or something of that caliber!

Consider the Occasion

Think about whether your style statement is suited for the occasion or not. If you’re going to a friend's wedding, it probably not the best time ever to make a style statement. You don’t want to take any of the attention away from the bride, whether it’s for a good or a bad reason! Stick to a classy party dress like one from Missy Dresses for occasions such as that. If it’s your birthday or a big night out, feel free to wear something different and have fun with it. When it’s your time in the spotlight, it’s the perfect time to make a statement!

Make Sure You Love it

If you’re making a style statement, make sure you’re making it for the right reasons. Because you love it! If you don’t love it, it just won’t look right. You don’t want to end up looking like Lady Gaga in her Kermit the frog dress. When you love your outfit, you’ll exude confidence. This will make it look even better! If you feel uncomfortable, you shouldn’t try. Stepping out of your comfort zone is great, but not if you’re going to give off uncomfortable vibes. How would you describe yourself? Use 3 or 4 words. Would you describe your outfit the same way? If not, then you should probably consider switching it up.

Start Off With Accessories

If you’re not used to making style statement and you’re a little frightened, then start off with your accessories instead. WeWood watches are different and you’re bound to get a lot of compliments on them. You could even just go for statement shoes and bag with an understated outfit. Start off small and then build yourself up!

Pair With Something More Understated

If you’re wearing a statement top, pair it with something understated like plain jeans so that you don’t look like you’re trying too hard. If you plan on going all out with your outfit, maybe keep your hair and makeup understated too. It all depends on where you're going.

How to: Get over the feeling of having nothing to wear

How is it that we all have closets filled with dresses, drawers packed with clothes, and shelves decorated with bags, yet we have a high tendency to feel like there's nothing to wear? The reality is that things get boring. The solution isn't necessarily to buy new things, but to remix what you have and to get inspiration from unlikely places.

Try Something on You Wouldn’t Usually Consider

If ever I’m stuck in a fashion rut, I try something I wouldn’t usually consider. Whether it’s because of the color, cut, or style, I just try it on. I grab a couple of things that wouldn’t usually take my fancy and I can end up surprised. I’ve bought a few new items this way in the past! At the very least, you’ll have a good laugh in the changing rooms.

Find a New Favourite Pattern

If you’ve never worn a pattern, you’re missing out! Or, perhaps there’s always a pattern you gravitate towards. Find a new favorite. Go for stripes over spots. Pick floral rather than animal. Just do something different and see how you feel!

Play With Accessories

Your accessories can enhance an outfit and make it so much more fun. If you're not one for statement jewelry, turning a good piece into your staple can really help define your style, like with Shinola watches for women.

Go Darker/Brighter

Take a look in your wardrobe and decide whether you wear mostly colour or darks. Whichever you usually do, do the opposite. If you prefer dark colours, wear something bright for a while. If you wear brights a lot, go for a more mysterious, dark outfit.

Try Vintage Clothing

Vintage clothing is amazing! If you’ve never tried it, I highly recommend you do. Not only is it better for the environment, it’s unique. It’s very unlikely you’ll find somebody else with that same piece anywhere near you, if at all. I always get compliments and questions when I wear my vintage. Just make sure the fit is good! Have it altered if you can.

Play a Game

This might help you, it might not. Either way, it’s a bit of fun! Get some big bags and fill one with tops, one with shoes, one with bottoms, etc. Then, without looking, pull an item from each bag. Lay them out on the floor and take a pic. You might find that some items you never would have paired look great together!

Ask for Help

Sometimes, fresh eyes are all you need. Ask a friend to style an outfit or two for you. Don’t get involved, just let them do their thing. You might learn a few things along the way!

How to: Make florals less girly

Florals have been on trend for a while, but not all of us want to look like we stepped out of a soft meadow from the 50's. Yes, flowers in their essence are pretty and delicate, but with the right styling, you can strike a balance between vintage charm and modern edge.

Starting off with a super feminine floral top as an example for your base, the key is to contrast textures. Try pairing the top with some leather or distressed denim shorts from H&M. Instead of subtle accessories, try some chunkier jewelry, like stacked bracelets or a bold metal necklace. Finally, tie together the look with an ankle boot. I usually opt for classic black, but I'd even try mixing florals with this floral Dr Marten boot found at Union Jack Boots that is pretty much the epitome of edgy and pretty.

How to: Mix spring trends

Florals, and sports, and colours, oh my! As an indecisive person, I can never stay set on my favourite spring trend to wear. So why decide? Why not wear them all at once instead?

One trend that has been around for a few seasons now is florals. They're pretty and typically feminine. But somewhere along the line of our re-ignited obsession with the 90s, styling florals to be more edgy came into play. Which ties in really nicely with the athletic trend. I'd also like to distinguish that the athletic trend is really "athletic-inspired". Walking around in yoga pants and a varsity team hoodie doesn't count as fashion. But when you're borrowing from those ideas with graphic print t-shirts and baseball caps. And bright colours are always in style for spring. Always. Sure, certain colours are more popular than others during different years, but you can never go wrong with a pop of colour after a dreary winter.

So I've put together this set that showcases how you can throw the floral, sporty, and bright trends together. The great thing about a plain t-shirt with some simple text is that it can be paired with any floral pattern. Layering this look with a light denim jacket really ties the look together by adding a bit of edginess to the florals while maintaining a pretty vintage quality. Then, just add a colourful bag or clutch for some spring cheerfulness and grab a pair of floral sunnies. Finally, slip on your favourite pair of plain sneakers to top off the athletic look. And there you go- a great look to go exploring around town, and with sensible shoes. Hourray for no more arch-killing heels!

How to: Wear knee-length skirts

As a non-short (yet not quite tall) person, I can't believe how short above-the-knee skirts are getting nowadays. Which is why I'm ecstatic that knee-length or below the knee skirts are back in style. With the dominant style being about showing leg for a while now, I find myself concerned that midi skirts will cut my leg off in an awkward spot to make me look stubby. So I've put together a few tips on how to choose and style a knee-length skirt that will still accentuate your height.

1.)  Choosing a length: What you want is a skirt that falls right below the knee to a length just above your calves. Avoid skirts that cover only a part of your knee joint. This would cut off the length of your legs at an awkward place, leaving your lower leg looking stubby and your knee looking unnatural.

2.)  Straight cuts: While a tight bodycon skirt might look too much like a tight burrito wrap on your legs, a flexible pencil skirt can do wonders to look relaxed and/or sophisticated. To flatter your figure, try finding a skirt that goes inwards slightly around the hem so there's emphasis on your curves.

3.)  Feeling flowy: If you're more of a flowy chiffon or A-line skirt person, try to find a pleated skirt. Even subtle pleats will create vertical lines for the eye to follow, giving you a leaner look.

4.)  Shoe pairings: Like in any other outfit, this is pretty much personal. But keep in mind that if you're going for a chunky edgy look with ankle boots, make sure the top of the shoe falls below your calves. Then, the hem of the skirt over the knee and the top of the shoe below the calf creates a natural window for the eyes, which emphasized the length of the lower legs.

How to: Wear black on Valentine's Day

French Connection lace dress / Pearl necklace / MAC lipgloss / Vera Wang perfume

I'm not a fan of Valentine's Day. I'm not a fan of gift guides, I'm not a fan of red and pink, and I'm not a fan of cheesy outfit ideas. I understand that people like being festive, but wearing red on Valentine's Day gets overwhelming and cliche really quickly. Which is why I'm more of a fan of wearing black (and not just because it represents my disdain for romance).

1.) Grab the Little Black Dress: It's the go-to piece for any occasion, so why not Valentine's Day? It's classy, classic, and a great blank canvas that lets the attention fall on your personality instead of your devotion to festive colours. To get that festive sultry look, black lace is a great way to go.

2.) Be a minimalist on the pink and red: Good things come in small packages, right? The same philosophy goes for wearing colours on V-Day. Instead of looking like a giant red box of candy, add a subtle pop of colour in your accessories or makeup. Think lipstick, shoes, and bags.

3.) Let your jewellery speak: Whether it's a simple string of pearls or a bold statement bracelet, try emphasizing your jewellery rather than your colours. It's a great way to stand out in a sea of red and pink by focusing on the details.

Also, I'm not an everyday perfume kind of person, but I think that this is one of those occasions where a little extra scent is acceptable. Especially when my fragrance of choice is to smell like weddings. Now that's getting into the Valentine's spirit.

How to: Easy DIY Ugly Christmas Sweater

Tis the season for festive holiday sweaters. And while ugly Christmas sweaters have become popular, do you really want an ugly sweater or do you want a cute Christmas sweater with a few tacky touches? If your answer is the latter, this is the guide for you. I'm not handy. I'm not crafty. And I swear that if I can do it, you can do it.

What you'll need:
-Sweater
-Christmas stocking
-Felt
-Garland
-Pompoms
-Scissors
-Needle and thread (substitute for hot glue gun, if you'd like)

1.) Find a Christmas stocking with a festive character on it. Bonus points if you find one that acts a bit 3D, like a snowman with its nose sticking out. I found one at the dollar store.
Then cut it out and sew (or glue) it onto the centre of the sweater. Don't worry about the centering or stitches being perfect because hey, it's supposed to be ugly.

2.) Use felt to cut out the shape of holly leaves, then add pompoms together as the berries. I chose to put the hollies on the shoulder of the sweater so they look like little shoulder ornaments. Also called "epaulettes", if you want to be fancy.

3.) Use some garland to add some shiny bling to your sweater. Put it on your character, decorate the outline of the character, line the sleeves and/or the neckline of the sweater, whatever! Be creative and tacky.

4.) Cut out some felt snowflakes and stick them on the sweater. No two snowflakes are alike. But again, remember that this is an ugly Christmas sweater. The snowflakes don't have to be intricately beautiful. I folded the felt into quarters and cut a triangle into each edge and corner for this shape. Then, scatter them around the sweater.

And there you have it! An ugly, but loveable Christmas sweater that you won't be ashamed to wear in public. Super easy, super cheap, and a super way to get attention at those holiday gatherings.

How to: Mix cute and edgy

I've had a soft spot for cute winter/Christmas sweaters this season. But I'm a bit wary of wearing festive prints that look like they could be worn by a five year old. So if I'm gonna pull off a cute sweater, I'd want to style it with a more edgy look to balance out the holiday cheer.

Playing with proportions is a great way to pull off a refined and cool look. Oversized sweaters are the way to go this season, which look great with a fitted skinny jean tucked into classic black ankle boots. Oversized is also the way to go for your accessories. Reach for a larger tote bag rather than a small purse (and this is also a lot more functional!). If your sweater isn't overly busy, pair it with a chunky necklace, which can take a bit of the attention off the cuteness of the sweater. And finally, adding a beanie is a great way to top off the look (get it?) with a cozy touch.

And there you go- 3 C's of winter wear. Cute, cozy, cool.
