The weekend suit

Blue velvet top c/o DressLily / Nike Lunar Stelos / Boyfriend jeans from Joe Fresh / Black blazer from H&M

As much as I like having seemingly endless choices of what to wear, I find myself envying how easy it is for guys to throw on a suit and recycle outfits on loop. The other day, someone asked me what kind of suit I would wear if I had the option then. After a bit of reflection, I realized that I have a weekend suit - something that I wear on Casual Fridays that carries me through to the weekend.

I started off wearing this outfit on Fridays because it's a good mix of polished and comfortable (when I change into my work heels). But why stop there? Why does grocery shopping on a Saturday mean that I have to look like I rolled out of bed?

I think it's funny when people say that I look put together because they have no idea how much laziness really goes into what I wear. I live in these boyfriend jeans when I can because they provide enough eating space to conquer a buffet. Don't be fooled by the blazer - I'm fake fancy.

Wasted love

Asymmetric tank top c/o New Dress / Distressed boyfriend shorts from Target / Slingback mules from Winners

Let me tell you about how I got these shorts. A story also known as "This is how far I'll go to save money".

Once upon a time, Target opened hundreds of stores across Canada without doing any test marketing or market research. Angry Canucks complained that prices were too high and merchandise was scarce - nothing like we've heard from our American neighbours. After mere months of mass misery, Target pulled out of Canada completely. Within their last few weeks, Target held huge closing sales. Curious, I went to browse. I picked out these shorts and an electronic version of Taboo, then went to go line up for an hour or two.

So just to save 50% off, I wasted the greater part of an afternoon and bought shorts that are actually too big for me. I absolutely loved the length and the slightly distressed look, but I don't think the value of the shorts met up to the amount of patience I used. Oh well, at least Taboo is fun...

Dirty white

Taupe blazer from Forever 21 / Cream sweater from PacSun / Quilted mint bag from LuLu's / Light wash jeans from PacSun / Twisted gold necklace from Joe Fresh

You know how people say that wearing white is a magnet for a spill? I've noticed that I do drop things on my white shirts frequently. So much so, that I'm starting to wonder if all my clothes are food-stained and gross. Maybe I'm not messier when I wear white. Maybe my other clothes are just darker so the food gets camouflaged.

Similarly, I seem to have a thing for dropping chocolate on my jeans at awkward times. The first time, I dropped chocolate on my thigh right before standing up in front of the class to do a presentation. The second time was again on my thigh at school. Because I didn't want it to stain, I *subtly* tried to rub off the chocolate. On my thigh. Then I swear that someone was trying to talk me up as this happened. Let the record show that rubbing a spot on your thigh is never a good idea in public, not even because of food stains.

Denim darling

Jeans from Liu Jo / Black sweater from Forever 21 / Green plaid scarf from TJ Maxx

Let me preface this post by saying that I hate wearing jeans. On a cold winter day, after dragging myself out of the coziness of bed, the last thing I want to do is squish myself into stiff, uncomfortable jeans.

I received this pair of Liu Jo jeans from their contest on twitter. Admittedly, I wanted these jeans mostly out of curiosity. When these Liu Jo jeans are from Italy and retail at over $100, how do they compare to my cheap denim? Now, they're not amazingly comfortable, but I do notice a difference in the fit. They don't sag in awkward places and they're not so tight that they cut off circulation in others. It's a perfect fit everywhere. And I also really like how they're on trend with the whole "distressed denim" look, but while still remaining subtle and tasteful. So if I absolutely have to wear jeans this season, it's going to be this pair.

Basic essentials

After such a long winter, I've drawn my colour palette inspiration from the beach. Classic blue and khaki, which kind of makes me feel like I rolled out of a Gap ad.  I never used to be much of a fan for that kind of plain preppy style, but I'm starting to see the benefits. I think by now, we understand the concept of owning essential pieces to mix and match and wear for many years to come. But I also forgot how comfy basics are. A relaxed t-shirt is like going out around town in dressed up pajamas, and I have no objections to that.

I'm also a fan of neutral colours because it means that I can make my jewellery a little more flashy. I would've worn more stacked rings if I could, but the set that I got doesn't quite fit me. Which is a shame because I've really been into the stacked ring trend lately. I wish that you could select where your fat went. But even gaining a bit of finger fat is a hard thing to ask for.

You can vaguely see it in the background of the photos, but it's nice to see that the lake is actually blue for once. After a harsh snow that has finally melted, it's almost as if the lake has been washed, watered down with fresh precipitation, and fresh for once. In a populated city with a ton of pollution and a nuclear plant visible from the shore, the lake is usually an odd shade of dark blue-grey. For once, this looks like water that I'd actually want to swim in. Except that it's still just 10 degrees and not nearly warm enough for that.

How to: Mix spring trends

Florals, and sports, and colours, oh my! As an indecisive person, I can never stay set on my favourite spring trend to wear. So why decide? Why not wear them all at once instead?

One trend that has been around for a few seasons now is florals. They're pretty and typically feminine. But somewhere along the line of our re-ignited obsession with the 90s, styling florals to be more edgy came into play. Which ties in really nicely with the athletic trend. I'd also like to distinguish that the athletic trend is really "athletic-inspired". Walking around in yoga pants and a varsity team hoodie doesn't count as fashion. But when you're borrowing from those ideas with graphic print t-shirts and baseball caps. And bright colours are always in style for spring. Always. Sure, certain colours are more popular than others during different years, but you can never go wrong with a pop of colour after a dreary winter.

So I've put together this set that showcases how you can throw the floral, sporty, and bright trends together. The great thing about a plain t-shirt with some simple text is that it can be paired with any floral pattern. Layering this look with a light denim jacket really ties the look together by adding a bit of edginess to the florals while maintaining a pretty vintage quality. Then, just add a colourful bag or clutch for some spring cheerfulness and grab a pair of floral sunnies. Finally, slip on your favourite pair of plain sneakers to top off the athletic look. And there you go- a great look to go exploring around town, and with sensible shoes. Hourray for no more arch-killing heels!

Paper bags and plastic hearts

I'm a bit on the fence about these shorts. Let's just forget about the cute waistband and tie for a moment. When I'm standing up, they seem like they could be work appropriate with a blazer. But when I'm sitting down...well, they're just a tad on the short side. During times where I'm already at work before I notice that I'm showing a bit too much leg, I'll avoid leaving my desk at all costs. Being at a corner desk, I can easily hide. But this means not getting up for lunch, strategically dehydrating myself so I don't have to use the washroom, and ending the day with the chair equivalent of bed sores.

By the lake

Had a little date day by taking a long walk by the lake. For you hopeless romantics, it's not as cute as it sounds. We're broke so this was something free to do. And it was a long walk because it took 2.5 hours to get from one bus station to the next one. That wouldn't have been my choice otherwise...I would've given up long before that. Especially because a stupid vampire mosquito bit me in the middle of my neck, so I was dying for some anti-itch cream.

Shady

It kind of concerns me that for a while now, I thought that my eyes weren't visible through my sunglasses. But looking at these pictures, they are. Which means that I've totally been staring people down or checking them out, thinking that they couldn't see me, but there's a good chance that that's not the case.
