Perfecting girly grunge

Finding your unique style is something that can take quite a long time. A person's style is something that develops over many years, and the route we go down can depend on a lot of different factors. For example, you may find that your personal interests and the kind of environment you are brought up in are what shapes your taste in fashion. Of course, we've all had fashion faux pas in the past - but this is all part of shaping your personal style. But what do you do if you like more than one style at once? This is something that's not uncommon in the fashion world.

Every new season brings with it new collections from the top designers in the world, and with those collections come a brand new set of trends. Once the work has been showcased at major fashion events such as New York Fashion Week, these catwalk styles start to filter down into the high street stores and the shopping malls - which is where the majority of us pick them up. In any given season, you can expect to find three or four major trends that dominate most of the stores. Therefore, there is quite a high possibility that you will take a shine to at least a couple of these trends. The problem starts when we try to follow a trend to the letter, and we end up having to mostly buy two different closets to accommodate all these clothes that won't mix and match. But this can be expensive and time-consuming - and we haven't even taken into account the fact that these trends get easily replaced at the turn of a new season.

If you find yourself being drawn to a pair of juxtaposing trends, you may think that you simply have to resign yourself to wearing just one of them at a time. However, this is not necessarily the case. One example of how you can mix different trends together is the 'girly-grunge' look. For those of us who are a little bit tomboy but who don't want to lose all our femininity, this is a great hybrid-style that is surprisingly easy to re-create yourself. Read on to find out how to master it.

Getting creative with new materials

A typically feminine look usually consists of delicate, floaty materials. Think sheer blouses, ruffled cotton, and beautiful lace. By contrast, a more grungy look is commonly made up of more harsh-looking materials, such as leather and denim. You may not think that throwing all these materials together would work, but providing you do it correctly, you can end up with a great look. For example, why not try layering a distressed leather jacket over a sweet floral blouse? The leather (or faux leather) jacket will give you that sought-after rock and roll vibe, while the floral shirt will mean you still maintain an air of femininity about you. You could even wear typically 'girly' clothes in materials you may have never even considered before - such as trying out a denim dress. Accessorize with silver jewelry, a red lip and dark eyes for a gothic-inspired look.

It's all in the shoes

The kind of shoes most commonly associated with femininity are a chic pair of heels. But remember, nailing girly grunge is all about perfecting a hybrid of two otherwise opposing styles. Heels can still work if you are going somewhere that requires you to dress up, but you will need to be very particular about them. For example, if you have a girly dress that you want to add a bit of an edge to, why not slip on a pair of killer studded heels for that 70's glam rock vibe? Otherwise, an easy way to switch up your daytime look is by adding a pair of grungy shoes to an otherwise feminine outfit. One great way to do this is to pair a short day dress or oversized t-shirt dress with a pair of Doc Martens. Docs are the ultimate grunge shoe and easily add an air of coolness to just about any outfit. Be warned, though: they do take a long time to wear in, and you will probably have your feet rubbed raw with blisters during the first few weeks of wearing them! Wear thick socks and persist - once they are worn in, they will be the comfiest shoes you have ever put on your feet in your life. If black Docs are a little bit too much for you at this stage, remember they also come in a huge range of different colours and styles, from floral printed to bright pink. Another must-have pair of shoes to grunge up an outfit with is a pair of Converse sneakers or a pair of Vans. These shoes are timeless and are perfect for everyday wear.

Band shirts

You wouldn't be doing the grunge look any favours if you weren't seen sporting at least a couple of band shirts from time to time. Grunge is a style that emerged out predominantly in the late 80s and early 90s, when punk was ending and giving birth to a range of pioneering bands like Nirvana. So, expect to see many of their t-shirts still on sale, helping people achieve that grunge look even long after many of these bands have disbanded. If you want to go for a authentic look, try and find some real vintage shirts - you can look on places like eBay and Etsy, or visit local thrift shops and clothing sales. You never know, you might just come across an absolute gem! To avoid looking too masculine when wearing your band shirt, try pairing it with a skirt instead, and accessorizing with lots of pretty jewelry. Or, you could even get snap happy, if you think you're a dab hand with a pair of scissors! It is relatively easy to make a regular t-shirt into a tank top, which can often look more girly than an oversized shirt. There are plenty of guides online that tell you how to do this.

A little too little

Chunky sweater from Forever 21 / Lace slip dress from Smart Set

I'm gonna keep this post short.

I'm jetting off to Paris to Rome to Barcelona in less than a week, so if you have restaurants or must-see sights/shops, definitely let me know!

I bought this slip dress because I thought the lace and print was absolutely demure, but decided that it was a little too close to a nighty. Thank goodness for big sweaters and easy return policies. Relax, I just wore the dress to take these photos, it's not like I wore it outside before returning it.

Accidentally in love

Eyelash lace skirt c/o Rosegal / Knit tank top from Mendocino / Silver collar necklace c/o Rosegal / White envelope clutch / Slingback wedge sandals from Winners

"You get what you pay for". Usually, people say this when they cheap out and regret buying something of ridiculously low quality. But I prefer to use this saying as a cautionary grain of salt.

First off, I unintentionally chopped off my hair. I've complained about my barber before, and yes, I go to a barber to get my hair cut. But he's really nice and does a decent job for the price, so I went back. This time, I showed him a picture of the style I wanted and told him "2 inches off", which would leave my hair up well below my shoulders. The good news is that he did exactly the style that I showed him. The bad news is that he took 6 inches off my hair. I wanted so much to be mad, but all things considered, he did a really good job on a short hairdo.

And now we have Rosegal. I've bought from cheap online stores before, and with prices averaging between $5-$20, my expectations were super low. I was telling myself that for that price point, I should have low expectations. But I was absolutely pleasantly surprised. The lace skirt is opaque, the eyelash lash skirt is beautifully detailed and not frayed, and the silver necklace hasn't tarnished or broken. No, the material isn't super soft or anything, but for the price, it's no worse than anything you would get from Forever 21.

I could pay premium prices for things like haircuts and clothes, but there's something oddly addictive about being uncertain on whether or not things are going to turn out as an expected shame or as a great surprise. I know online shopping can be a gamble sometimes, but I definitely recommend taking a change on Rosegal and all their items here!

Sheer madness

Navy blouse c/o Lovely Wholesale / Lace skirt from Shop Ruche / Studded black bag / Navy Keds sneakers

I'd like to take this time to highlight the importance of having good lighting in your room. I got ready for work thinking I had a nice little outfit going on. It wasn't until after I got off work that I was informed that my shirt was fairly see-through. Oh, the shame! I work in an office with big bright windows and I'm pretty sure that lighting situation brought some unwanted highlights to my outfit. So thanks to dim lighting in my room (and maybe not enough caffeine), I didn't see that my bra was visible. Terrific.

In other news, I won a gift card to Shop Ruche about a year ago from Lot 65. I've been waiting for my friends to get married so I could buy something accordingly, but I got tired of waiting and went for this skirt while it was on sale. It's so pretty, but I gotta say that I'm disappointed that it fits a bit too tight. On the site, the measurements fit my usual size. But with this skirt on, it constricts my ribs and leaves a purple ring around my torso from cutting the blood circulation. Ugh, I hate inconsistent sizing.

Summer breeze

Flower lace shorts c/o Sammydress / Chambray blouse from Smart Set / Quilted bag from LuLu's / Camera ring c/o Bornpretty Store

I spent the weekend being touristy in my own city while exploring downtown life. I started out by falling asleep on the subway, waking up to find that I was at my stop, abruptly running to the door (only to be stopped by the hoards of people), muttering "noooo!" under my breath, then pretending to play it cool. After meeting up with a friend and collecting free samples along the way, we found ourselves at the waterfront. The view was nice, but it's kind of a weird atmosphere. It's a man-made beach, so it looks like a thin layer of sand is plunked there by the water. And sure, beaches should be relaxing, but this beach was so quiet, I almost felt like I had to whisper.

Being from the suburbs and having spent years in government-esque Ottawa, I forgot how trendy people can be in downtown Toronto. On the other hand, here I am with my chambray shirt and flower lace shorts feeling like I'm dressed like a 16 year old. Don't get me wrong, I love how cute and light they are, but it just felt out of place when every other girl was wearing a floral chiffon skirt with a crop top. Did I call Toronto trendy? Maybe "hipster" would be a better term.

How to: Wear black on Valentine's Day

French Connection lace dress / Pearl necklace / MAC lipgloss / Vera Wang perfume

I'm not a fan of Valentine's Day. I'm not a fan of gift guides, I'm not a fan of red and pink, and I'm not a fan of cheesy outfit ideas. I understand that people like being festive, but wearing red on Valentine's Day gets overwhelming and cliche really quickly. Which is why I'm more of a fan of wearing black (and not just because it represents my disdain for romance).

1.) Grab the Little Black Dress: It's the go-to piece for any occasion, so why not Valentine's Day? It's classy, classic, and a great blank canvas that lets the attention fall on your personality instead of your devotion to festive colours. To get that festive sultry look, black lace is a great way to go.

2.) Be a minimalist on the pink and red: Good things come in small packages, right? The same philosophy goes for wearing colours on V-Day. Instead of looking like a giant red box of candy, add a subtle pop of colour in your accessories or makeup. Think lipstick, shoes, and bags.

3.) Let your jewellery speak: Whether it's a simple string of pearls or a bold statement bracelet, try emphasizing your jewellery rather than your colours. It's a great way to stand out in a sea of red and pink by focusing on the details.

Also, I'm not an everyday perfume kind of person, but I think that this is one of those occasions where a little extra scent is acceptable. Especially when my fragrance of choice is to smell like weddings. Now that's getting into the Valentine's spirit.

Masculine feminine

So I got dressed up for dinner and even wore a leather tie to be fancy. Unfortunately, the fine Italian place we went to turned out to be a little pizza parlour kinda thing that was so fancy, they just give you a soda and a cup and force you to pour your own drink like a caveman. It's a good thing I was wearing combat boots to make myself fit into the casual crowd a bit more. Then again, it probably didn't matter what I was wearing because wolfing down an entire pizza with my hands pretty much speaks for itself.

A new road

It was my first day of starting post post-secondary education today. And I'm a bit ashamed to admit, but as I met new people, I had a Mean Girls-esque monologue going through my head. I'm in web design, and I swear that there are the most stereotypical characters in my program. You've got the underachievers, the guys who don't see the light of day, girls who only dress in hoodies, hipster artists, balding man who lives with his mom, people who won't get off their high horse, and the greatest person you will ever meet (obviously me). Though I might also be known as "girl who wore heels when everyone else was in flip flops and sneakers".

By the lake

Had a little date day by taking a long walk by the lake. For you hopeless romantics, it's not as cute as it sounds. We're broke so this was something free to do. And it was a long walk because it took 2.5 hours to get from one bus station to the next one. That wouldn't have been my choice otherwise...I would've given up long before that. Especially because a stupid vampire mosquito bit me in the middle of my neck, so I was dying for some anti-itch cream.

Lace overlay

I've wanted a collar necklace for at least two years now.  The nice ones that I've seen are usually fairly extravagant with studding, pearls, or a design of some kind.  Somehow, that brings up the price of these necklaces dramatically.  I can't justify paying over 20 bucks for a piece of costume jewellery, especially one that has a good likelihood of just being a passing fad.  Finally, I was able to find one from eFoxcity for under 10 bucks.

I think that the necklace looks like it was made for this top.  And I would definitely wear the two together more often, but the top has buttons at the back of the neck.  That means I can only wear this top when someone else is helping me do up the buttons.  I might just start telling people that I'm sporting the new "trend" of unbuttoned clothes. "Uh, yeah...the top's supposed to be worn like that. I definitely did not miss the buttons at the back of my top...."

As a cheap clothing store, eFoxcity's got a pretty spiffy collection of men's shirts and wedding dresses too.

P.S. Last day to enter my giveaway! In fact, by the time some of you read this, it'll already be over.
